THE FLOOR - OUR SERVICES EXPLAINED
Floor restoration has several stages:
REPAIRING YOUR WOODEN FLOORS
Removal / Replacement of Damaged Boards
We check every block and board and if any are damaged beyond repair, we will replace them. We use reclaimed timber - wherever possible, of the same age and quality.
Loose boards are reset and fixed in position. We remove old tacks and nails - and hammer protruding nails flat.
Gap filling
A gap-filled floor has a pleasing and even look. It’s not always necessary - but filling gaps does prevent draughts (especially on the ground floor) and the build up of dust. The floor is also tightened, so timber movement is minimised.
Traditional methods of gap filling include:
* resin - mostly used floors with lots of fine gaps, such as parquet and mosaic. Dust from the floor is mixed with a resin and applied to the gaps with a filling knife.
* wooden strips - solid fillets of reclaimed pine and other timbers are glued and forced into the gaps, being chiselled back before sanding flat.

Staining and colours
Stains are oil, solvent or water-based and applied by hand or roller. Drying time is at least eight hours.
Clear natural stains enhance the wood grain. Coloured stains give a new colour to the wood (as in darkening pine floor).
Top-quality stains give a more even coating. The cheaper brands are false economy as some tend to leave risk dull or patchy areas.
We recommend staining and varnishing in two distinct stages. The colour of the floor is easier to control and the sealant more durable. The sealant will wear away in time, yet the underlying coloured stain will remain unaffected. Coloured varnishes have the disadvantage of losing their colour when the surface is damaged.
Alternatives are for the floor to be painted - or use a coloured wax (such as lime wax) for a soft tinting effect on the visible wood grain.
Coloured wax is a good choice for floors with dull washed colours. With quick and affordable colour to match your home interior – your floor will look very different.
The modern water based stains are odour-free and come in a large variety of colours. These range from the traditional wood colours through to contemporary pigmenting: eg white, red, blue or even pink!
Should you require a specific colour or an unusual colour, we can create the one for you. This can be a task of artistic proportions: as when we mixed 75 different pigments to match the floor colour in an ancient castle!

WOOD FLOOR SEALING – VARNISHING
Varnish or lacquer
Compared to oil sealants, these artificial products are more durable and easier to maintain. They are suitable for floor areas bearing mid to heavy traffic.
Modern lacquers no longer have the glossy ‘plastic’ look of tradtional varnish. They come in a matt, satin or high gloss finish with a pleasing silky sheen.
A polyurethane lacquer is ideal for general use – it’s highly resistant to wear but may cause some discoloration to the underlying floor.
A part polyurethane/part acrylic floor varnish is a good choice for areas with lighter usage. In no way will this yellow or darken the wood.
Lacquers require three applications - and for full strength sealing need to be left to dry for 24 hours.

WOOD FLOORS FINISHING – WAXING
Wax - completely natural - is the safest traditional floor finish for your home, family, business and the environment.
Your floor will breathe under a soft and mellow finish.
Wax finishes require two applications.
Hard Wax Oil
This natural product is based on waxes and vegetable oils. Like natural oil, it brings out the colour of the wood – and emphasises its natural grain.
Now becoming a popular choice of sealant, hard wax oil provides a good balance between natural oil and lacquer. You get the best of both products: a natural look and feel plus improved durability.
Its micro-porous nature means that it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. It can be used in areas of high humidy, being less prone to dry out than natural oil.
Further floor protection couldn’t be simpler: apply more coats of hard wax oil or a thinned down ‘revive coat’.

WOOD FLOOR OILING
Natural Oil
This organic product epitomises the traditional natural look of a wooden floor. You also benefit from ease of maintenance. Although oil tends to dry out in humid conditions, the finish is easy to top up with extra coats of oil that cover minor damage.
Oil has great water-repellent qualities – and resistance to scuffs and abrasions. It comes in matt or satin finishes - and can take up to 24 hrs to dry.

Other Specialist Services:
When you have an old concrete fire hearth spoiling your complete wooden floor…. Leave it to us. We’ll remove it and fill in the gap with matching flooring.
Wooden decking

These attractive garden features can soon become a worn, weathered and shabby embarrassment. We’ll sand the surface to remove the old top layer and reveal a new layer of fibres.
Then finish off with decking oil or stain for an impressive new finish.
Stair stripping
Often the feature of a property that is most taken for granted - being allowed to fester under layers of paint or carpet. Sanding is a painstaking job, for sure, but the results repay the effort.
After stripping and sanding the entire tread and risers, the whole stairway can be stained and varnished. Or, for a really striking effect, we can paint the risers in white and leave the steps in clear varnish.
We usually only treat these parts of the stairs and don't tackle banisters.
